About

JOEL ‘KACHI BENSON’s work revolves primarily around social impact storytelling, and his documentaries have been featured at various festivals and venues including The Berlin Film Festival, Hot Docs, Cannes XR, The Phi Centre, and The British Film Institute. In 2018 he became the first Nigerian filmmaker to use Virtual Reality technology for storytelling, when he produced and directed In Bakassi, a virtual experience of life in one of the largest IDP Camps in Northeast Nigeria.

In 2019, Kachi Benson became the first African to win the Venice Lion for Immersive Storytelling, at the Venice Film Festival. In 2021, he was engaged by Disney to co-direct Madu, a coming-of-age documentary, which is billed to be released late 2023. In collaboration with Impact Partners and Hunting Lane Films, he is also currently working on The Harvest, a sequel to his multi-award winning short film, Daughters of Chibok.
